That's a heck of a good article. Vonnegut was a great writer.

Does it seem that JtR's murders opened the flood gates for true crime reporting? We see so many cases of serial killings and senseless murders through the years after Jack was active.

It is possible to find cases of murders and even massacres before JtR, but none that I have read about were extensively covered or followed up. There were some interesting cases her in the U.S. but beyond initial reports there was little else. Is JtR the absolute first to get such coverage in the press? Considering how many similar crimes have been reported in so many places after 1888, there were surely a bunch of them all over the world that we have never heard of, prior to 1888.

I think pre-1888 cases were covered as local events. Jack got international coverage. Maybe that made all the difference.
