Default Research 2012-2017

Thread for mentioning, sharing, or suggesting research in the new year of 2012.

The primary purpose of the thread is to enable fellow researchers to come back here in late December of 2012 to reflect on the efforts of this ( 2012 ) year.

Thanks.

Not being one who likes to do half a job of anything, for me Druitt and Mortimer will probably be the key focuses of 2012. Just how much time I will be able to devote to it is questionable as 2012 shapes up to be the busiest year for a long time, but I would like to get Cris Malone & myself's final debate on Mortimer finished and published.

Best of luck to everyone for their research this year, whatever it may be.

Cheers,
Adam.

Efforts are underway to get to Liverpool later this year. I am also planning visits to West Yorkshire to find some material on a person of interest, and will be in East Yorkshire looking at Annie Stephenson.

I'm wondering whether anyone who might have access to continental European police records for the 1880's-1890's will have an opportunity to peruse them for names of murder suspects in local crimes who had once lived in or visited ( as in a seaman ) London.

I hope our comrades in the U.K. will continue to scour the National Archives ( maybe a group get together to "bum-rush" the Archive) for relevant materials which may have been overlooked or considered at one time to be irrelevant, but now of possible relevance.

I'll be busy plodding along ,as usual, in newspaper archives this year.

Because I'm now writing my book, each chapter will bring me back to re-treading my steps from past years and seeking out new items of information to add in. Therefore, my research will be great and varied. From Emma Smith to the Torso murders and everything in between. Once I've finished with my victim studies, I'll devote myself to going over Le Grand again, for the first time in two years. I've intentionally distanced myself from the material on him to focus objectively on victim studies. It's a frustrating but exciting project. So that's where my attentions will be focused. One thing I'd very much like to learn more about would be the Parisian torso that supposedly is very much like the London torsos, although this would require a researcher who can read French and translate.

Yours truly,

Tom Wescott

I really don't know whether this is the right thread to do it, but I have been meaning for some time to thank Howard (and more importantly, Nina, who we all know does the hard work) and everyone else who contributes press cuttings. It takes time to find, snip, and post these, so it's not a quick and easy throw away that some might think, and they grow and have grown into one of the most valuable resources we have. Thanks and deep appreciation to everyone.

Hi Jenni, thanks for that. I'll be delighted to get your feedback. And I'm depending on you to stand over Neal and force him to read it. I'm aware of his disdain for 'suspect' books, but I'm writing this one to appeal to all Ripperologists. Well, maybe not Phil Carter, but everyone else.

Yours truly,

Tom Wescott
