The Crime Scenes Lacking any forensic sciences as a tool,we're as well off as the contemporary detective was . That won't deter us,as we continue to investigate those scenes of madness....or calculated acts...

Thank you for doing this Debs. It looks like it was a lot of work.

Just a quick, interesting fact I found out about Horner & Sons while researching the square myself.

From Wikipedia:

The Queen was an English automobile produced from 1904 to 1905. "The car for the million or the millionaire", it was sold by Horner & Sons of Mitre Square, London. Models of 12 and 16 hp were offered; prices ranged from 235 guineas to 275 guineas.

Thanks, Jerry. I started it a while back when DJA on Casebook (the guy everyone thought was me for some reason!) told me he had been trying to find out who owned/rented 6 Mitre St in 88, for the last 8 years.

I am confused by the two sets of houses numbered 1.2.3 in Mitre Square.
Does the fact that #1 and 2 Mitre Square were included with Nos 11 and 12 Mitre Street too mean that they had an entrance or presence in both places?

I was interested that Hyam Hyams was still at #24 in 88 and then I remembered that Tracey found that this wasn't the same Hyams who ended up in Colney Hatch.

I wonder if Nos. 1&2 Mitre Square were part of Williams' warehouse which also faced Mitre Street? No.9 was Taylers so it would make sense that Nos. 10&11 would have been the corner where Williams and Co. was situated. The 1887 Goad map shows Williams & Co. as No. 12 when the 1939 map has that building as No.10.

Debs,

See post #66 by Simon here. You can see 10 and 11 were in fact at Williams and Co and accessible from both the square and Mitre Street.

Thanks Jerry. The land tax records obviously note the configuartion pre-Williams and Co when Rosa Borginsky had #11 and a note that all four premises are all one warehouse added. What was puzzling me was how these were two sets of houses numbered 1,2,3 listed in Mitre Square , the ones that became Williams owned by the Corporation of London and the other set owned by the United Synagogue ans becoming part of Kearley and Tonge. I guess one set were numbered after the other set became part of either warehouse premises but the land tax records noted previous and current configurations?

In fact, Rosa Borginsky is sill listed as the occupier and the Corporation of London as the owners of 2 mitre Square and 11 Mitre St right up to 1913 while William Shepherd is listed as owner and occupier of 10, 11 Mitre St in the same book.

When I worked for Kearley and Tonge in Mitre Square just over 50 years ago the majority of the directors were Jewish and were involved with several synagogues in the district though the United Synagogue adjacent to Mitre Square was at that time a bombed out shell.

Thanks Phillip. I wonder if the United Synagogue kept hold of the property that was to become Kearley and Tonge and just leased it or if K & T bought it outright?

This is a great resource while we ponder Kate's last half hour and what might have drawn her to Mitre Square.

Good bump up, Anna....

It would be interesting if, one day, a list or even the name(s) of a few after hours pubs surfaced.
