Hi Howard,

Bransby Williams [1870 - 1961] was a well known British actor of his day and it seems there is quite a lot of info on the web.

Bransby Williams - The Stage Door Keeper (CDR31)

Known as "The Hamlet of the Halls", Bransby Williams had a long and distinguished career. Today Bransby Williams is mainly remembered for his portrayal of various characters from the novels of Dickens which he performed well into the television age. In his performances on the Halls, his specialism was as a quick change artist and mimic. A fine example of this is given in "The Stage Door Keeper" where Bransby uses the storyline to introduce a superb variety of artistes. Also included is the classic rendering of Milton Hayes "The Green Eye of the Yellow God". As an aside, "The Caretaker" contains the first mention of "Jack the Ripper" on a recording, which coming only 24 years after the murders, would surely be thought controversial today. A fascinating insight into another side of the entertainment of the Music Hall. [Emphasis mine.]

From http://www.musichallcds.com/cdr31_page.htm

In a 2005 thread on Casebook, Philip Hutchinson wrote:

"I've come up with another one, folks. I have found a dealer and yesterday I received a nice 78 of Bransby Williams' 'The Caretaker', which was the first known recorded use of the term Jack The Ripper."

There's no putting anything past that Hutchinson fellow.

*******

I am not sure if "The Caretaker" also goes by the name of The Waxworks Watchman another monologue performed by Bransby Williams but it contains these lines--

Then Charlie Peace strolled in and said, "I've just left Jack the Ripper,
He's having quite a ripping time a-ripping up a kipper.
I'd like to murder someone too, it must be quite a time
Since last I had the pleasure of committing of a crime."

Hi Phillip and Chris,

Thanks for your posts, it was interesting to hear the voice of someone I only vaguely remember. I recall him being on TV when I was a child although I have long since forgotten what he was performing.

Somehow I find having seen someone on TV who was stopped by the police in Whitechapel at the time of the ripper, puts time into a perspective that often seems further away than it really is.

Hi All,

I guess it is not often that we get to see someone on TV who was involved in the events in Whitechapel in 1888. But it happened to me last night when I tuned in to an old movie "Hearts of Humanity" (1936).

One of the stars was.... Bransby Williams.

Dear Professor:

I notice that Williams was born in 1870....aside from the fact he lived in London during the time of the crimes, was there something specific ( you mentioned 'involved') that he did or experienced in relation to the crimes ?

Thanks for mentioning him, John....hope all is well.
I thought I had located a link to him reciting 'The Awakening Of Scrooge' ( from 1913, coincidentally the birth year of Robert Linford ).....but there are issues with it.
