I'd say it's for real String and connected with the dark arts of cyberwarfare, particularly with anonymous usage of the internet

I just checked out this Forum entry tonight. I spend a lot of time on Twitter & decided to see what anyone was saying about Cicada 3301 on there since so many different people worldwide Tweet. Of interest I found this article:

The article credits Joel Eriksson with solving it. I didn't understand the article which made less sense to me than the puzzle. I hope this link works. I'm not even smart enough to cut & paste stuff because I'm still kind of new to computers.
