Default Chris Scott 1949-2014

I'm very sad to share the news that Chris Scott passed away yesterday, cause unknown.

His sister announced on his Facebook page that Chris was discovered by his carer.

Despite having been unwell for some time, I know everyone here will be shocked at this news. As with Nemo, Chris was one of the very nicest of people. His research skills and input to the Ripper case were of the highest order.

It goes without saying he will be sorely missed.

Adam

Chris Scott was the reason a lot of us became so damned interested in Victorian newspapers.

Chris Scott went out of his way to help other people in our field.

One of the coolest moments I ever had in research was being alone in a chat room at 2 AM with him ( about 10 years ago) and shooting the breeze

I got the news from Mike Covell on Facebook and am in shock. Here are a couple of the posts. I'm sure Mike won't mind my sharing...

Tom: For those not immediately familiar with his name, you'll find it in the acknowledgments of only the best Ripper books published in the last decade. Ripperologists don't agree on much, but we all agree that Chris Scott is one of the finest researchers to ever grace the field. He published the groundbreaking 'Will the Real Mary Kelly...' and was working on a much-anticipated follow-up on that book, loaded with all there is to know (and wonder) about Mary Kelly. He was also a fine fiction writer. I have one of his books on kindle. The loss of Chris Scott as a person and a researcher is a very serious blow to us all.

Mike: "The Ripper In Ramsgate" was another fantastic piece. He self published and only a short run of 100 was ordered but it was a great book. He was such a charming guy, I remember his appearances on Rippercast with myself, Jonathan Menges and the gang.

Tom: Hi Mike Covell. Yes, I have the Ramsgate book as well. And let's not forget his Press Trawl series in Ripperologists. Or his countless contributions to the Casebook Press Report project. Chris Scott forged the way for folks like Debs Arif and yourself. It's impossible for me to fathom the field as it is today had there been no Chris Scott.

Yours truly,

Tom Wescott

Awful news. My thoughts to all. Chris had been ill for sometime, and fought with such dignity. He is irreplaceable, as a Ripperologist and a person.

Yet his legacy shall remain for all our benefit.

Though I never got to meet him, what a kind and generous person he was, always ready to help with research. Never asked for anything for himself.

May I suggest that folks write their feelings down and submit them to Adam Wood for inclusion in the next issue of Ripperologist....where he was the longest serving columnist...and author of other Ripper related articles ?
