Of course, today's Ten Bells wasn't a pub in 1828, and Commercial Street had yet to be created. But it's a great story nevertheless, and ties in with the one I posted on the HB thread about William Monk burying his father's body beneath his kitchen floor to protect it from the resurrectionists.

Gary:

No offense, but are you sure about that ?
The one fellow in the article mentions :

On 15th December last, two of my companions, and myself, went into the Ten Bells public house at Spitalfields, to get some refreshment.

Hi How,

No offence taken. The TB in 1828 was on the corner of Red Lion Street and Church Street (now Fournier Street). In the 1840s/50s, Commercial Street was created along the approximate line of Red Lion Street, but it was much wider and its creation involved the demolition of the old Ten Bells. The building that wound up on the corner of Commercial Street and Church/Fournier then became the TB and is the building we see today.

Gary

I gotcha, Gary....There was a Ten Bells in 1828, but one preceding the current establishment and situated on a different road.
Thank you
