Default Prince Albert Victor involved with murderer ?

Was he a murderer ? My great aunt Lydia Manton (nee Miller) who was a Gaiety Girl and died in very suspicious circumstances in London 01/10/1891. She was 22 and involved with Prince Albert Victor who also suddenly died himself a couple of months later 14/01/1892. By all accounts he was a liar and bad egg. Lydia was at the top of her game and her supposed suicide being because the prince had failed to turn up for lunch one day... This is all too doubtful and the press at the time thought so too, but were restrained from naming him as he was next in line to be king. The court hearing caused a scandal with him yet again managing to wangle his way out of difficulty with connections in high places. However the press in the colonies felt no need of hiding his identity which is a blessing. Thanks to The National Library of Australia for making this available.

Conan Doyle was inspired enough to include her in his next Sherlock Holmes story 'The Noble Bachelor' published shortly afterwards in April 1892 and renaming her Flora Miller.

I hope this is of sufficient interest to the fellows of this forum and I look forward to learning much more about my great aunt. Her sister Grace Mary Miller, my great grandmother, was also a Gaiety Girl with her, but luckily for her (and me) she eloped with my great grandfather and not Royal Eddy.

Marcus:

Isn't it more likely that Ms. Manton committed suicide because she was, in her mind, jilted ?

After all you've read about PAV...does he seem like someone who would use force and pour carbolic acid down a woman's throat ?

Interesting story! Carbolic acid, I think, would be a bad choice of poison for a murder if the victim might be found before death. It doesn't work fast like cyanide or some other poisons. I would think that would increase the chance the victim could name guilty parties if the substance was forced.

This is a fascinating case. One that should be looked at very carefully. There was definitely a high-level cover-up, I think.

Hi Marcus and welcome

David O'Flaherty, John Savage and myself did an article on Lydia in Ripperologist #129, December 2012.

Excellent. I have to go out, but was going to look that up when I got back. I'd done a lot of research on the case, then the article came along and it was clear we'd all done the same thing, except you'd done more than me.

Absolutely Paul, he was certainly a dodgy character who was probably knocked off himself shortly after.
