Absolutely Paul, he was certainly a dodgy character who was probably knocked off himself shortly after.

I found an article in the "New Zealand Herald" that said she had an expensive diamond bracelet after she returned from a short trip and that she cancelled an engagement in the theater.

(Forgive me if all this is in the article first posted. I read it but the print was small so I didn't read it as effectively as I should have.)

I watched a documentary on PAV recently and posted something from it on another thread. His diaries in the late 1880s show he was very much in love with Princess Alice of Hesse, the future Tsarina Alexandra. She was not interested in him. Lydia in some ways resembles her IMO.

Thanks Anna, diamonds and Royal connections, four maids, a butler and a lady's maid. Not exactly bad going for a 22 year old butcher's daughter from Tufnell Park.

Took a stroll down where Lydia Manton lived today in Mayfair, not a great deal left.... No 23 being where the big gray development is on the right side of the street
