Default Site Rules 7/6/09

With the cadre that participates at this time on the boards, there is virtually no need to enact any set of rules other than being civil to each other and "fighting nice".

Gee, Howard, you've proposed better ripper theories than that theory above.

Someone had recently pointed out to me on a now-deleted thread that:
This sort of post on a world-wide forum, is amateur, childish, insulting, and unacceptable. Derogatory remarks over a person that isn't on this site, and transferring from another site in order to say such things, is un-called for, and seems personal.

Truth bids me say that I have to agree. We once had rules posted in here, and one of them stated that derogatory comments about other sites or members thereon is not acceptable. We will NOT allow importation of grievances from other sites, and disparaging comments such as have been recently posted here cannot be tolerated.

Many in the field are highly opinionated and partisan to the point of being radical on a variety of subjects - suspects, theories, evidence, and fellow ripperologists. It takes all kinds, but your own personal actions and reactions must be kept in check, however strong you feel about it, him, or her.

There's a fine line between sarcasm, which is ok, and personal attacks, which are out of bounds. We understand your feelings, and may not disagree with them, but as operators of this site, it is incumbent for us to edit such posts appropriately and to issue warnings or other disciplinary measures as necessary. There are many other members to consider, and when I receive a complaint about a post, I rarely ignore it.

Therefore, the following will apply, effective immediately:

  1. First infraction - two weeks' probation. Objectionable posts may be edited or merely deleted, at our discretion.
  2. Second infraction - poster's posts will be moved to a queue for approval before they appear on the boards. Probation will be extended to two months, and content will be closely watched.
  3. Third infraction - at the least, the user's account will be deleted, and banning from the site may follow, depending on severity of infraction.

We love you all like sons or daughters, and we'd hate to lose you, but, we can always gain another son or daughter.

Please read and heed. These are not idle threats.
