An all too often repeated phenomenon in the East end of London is the wholesale demolition of entire streets that were extant in the era of Jack the Ripper. This is the former Winthrop Street, now little more than a small stub of road running alongside the old board school on Durward Street. As can be seen, it used to run right up to Brady Street in the distance, but has since been built over. This photomontage was prepared for my 2011 book “Fragments of the East End” which is now out of print.

Ripperland” will feature over forty of these superimposed images, covering Durward Street, Whitechapel Road, Osborn Street, Woods Buildings, Gunthorpe Street, Old Castle Street, Hanbury Street, Henriques Street, Back Church Lane, Mitre Square, Commercial Street, Dorset Street, Pinchin Street, Swallow Gardens and many more. The book will be published by Mango Books, and will be available from August 2017.

A 2011 photomontage showing the Roebuck public house at the eastern end of the former Buck's Row. The pub itself was demolished in 1994/5.

There are over forty new photomontages of Jack the Ripper's London in my forthcoming book "Ripperland", to be published in August by Mango Books.

All the best
Andrew

Default Flower & Dean Street Photomontage

With the exception of a very small stub of roadway adjoining Commercial Street, the old thoroughfare of Flower & Dean Street is no more. This photomontage, prepared for my 2011 book "Fragments of the East End" shows the street as it appeared in 1971.

There are over forty brand new photomontages like this one, in my new book "Ripperland", to be published by Mango Books this coming August.

Delegates at this year's Jack the Ripper East End Conference will be the first to get their hands on a copy, with online orders being taken the week after.

All the best
Andrew
