I do happen to believe that parts of the Diary writing resemble neurosyphilitic handwriting. In face in parts it is a text book example of it. However to be clear I am not suggesting the Diarist was the Ripper.

Friends: I have been reminded that the use of images from Robert Smith's book require his permission. Therefore we have pulled down the snips from the book until things get clarified.

FWIW I have spent a fair amount of time with the Diary and never noticed a watermark on the pages. Nor has Robert Smith or Keith Skinner. Of course we might all have missed something and the discussion is interesting and should continue.

I wonder what those vague vertical blobs are that can be seen beneath the ink splodge on that page? The previous facsimile wasn't detailed enough to see them, but they are there right enough in the new one. I presume it's this that is claimed to be a watermark.

(A lovely example of the varying thickness of line caused by the steel nib on that page too.)

Permission has been given for the use of the original photo that started the thread.

Robert Smith has asked me to remind people that in the future, permission must be sought before using any images from his book.

He also has this to say:

"It seems they are not talking about a watermark at all, but some words, which appear to be faint pencil marks underneath the smudges (perhaps notes made by the diarist).

It looks the same in color and black and white. Good. Now, could we get a DNA analysis?

Always dangerous of course to ASSume anything but several experts examined the Diary with ultra violet light and I'd have thought that would have revealed any watermark.

Personally I have a suspicion this is going to be a "FM" situation where people see what they wish to see. I enlarged this picture and honestly I don't see anything except a leprechaun.

I don't see anything significant at all.
