Default Whitechapel Crossrail

This is a plan of what the Durward Street area will look like after the Crossrail project has been completed – with a new entrance to the station virtually on the exact spot where Polly Nichols was murdered.
And trees planted outside Schneider’s – obliterating the site of a lamp?

I guess Crossrail will really improved the transport access in the area and make this quiet street a bit less scary to walk down for those living there.

Will the current entrance for the tube remain in place or will there only be one entrance, I guess a single entrance would be a squeeze?

The Durward Street entrance will be a secondary one - I bet it will only be open at the rush hour.
The y are being careful to preserve the original features of the main entrance.
But all the allyways crossing the tracks between Court Street and Brady Street will be obliterated.
They have also already cut a doorway into the northern side of the bridge that crossed the old Great Eastern Railway track cutting on Durward Street.

Hi All,

Good news.

Anything that eradicates the mis en scène of the Whitechapel murders is fine with me.

Time to move on and get a life, folks.

Regards,

Simon

Hi Simon,
yes its sad when things go, some more so than others. I' afraid I cant get sad about where a lamp post once was or what remains of the site of a murder Durward Street.

The Alleys are a bit more sad as they are part of the character of the area, but i think if i lived eg in the board school flats, this would be welcome (and increase the price of my property?)
