Even in black and white, the cheeks betray the Brown family's liking for alcohol.

Great Grandmammy Brown (right) always had a canny way of hiding the handcuffs in these family pics.

Great Grandmammy Brown (left) had the Brown family eye for a bargain. But the dampness she felt told her that it had perhaps been a mistake to buy the Borden sofa real cheap one day after the murder.

Little Howie always leaned like that. Apart from his jolly bonnet issues (over which a discreet veil will be drawn). his parents had told him that he'd been delivered by a stork, and it took them ten years to get him to stop standing on one leg.

Early in 1889 the photographer who took the picture of Mary Kelly was invited to America to photograph the Brown family, and once again did a fantastic job, considering that the photo was taken inside a shuttered room.
