Default American Ripper Series - History Channel

Tom Wescott recently mentioned that The History Channel will be featuring a series of programs under the title, American Ripper, in the near future.

If I can get a definite time down, I'll post it.

Apparently, according to Tom, one episode ( at least ) will be on H. H. Holmes.

I was going to start a thread in the Media section but I found this...

I looks well made - and I'm sure it will be interesting.
I think the whole series is about Holmes and is based around one of his Mudgett descendants.
It should boost the Ripper tourist business with more of those god-damn Yankee Dollars! Kerching!

I wonder of it will stoke up any internal controversy in the Ripperological world?

The only controversary will be the arguments about why one person got more screen time than the other. Mark my words.

The Holmes theory is lacking but having said that there will be nice article in the Dagger this month which might answer one or two previoulsy unknown points

A little heads-up for researchers when this program surfaces in April.
When the theory first surfaced a few years ago, no one brought up the 'residence in Whitechapel' bit ( see emboldened sentence below ).
I'll say no more.

A 'Sword & Scale' podcast about Holmes :

http://swordandscale.com/sword-and-scale-episode-30/

The story of Herman Webster Mudgett, otherwise known as H.H. Holmes, has been told numerous times: a brilliant man with so much potential but so inherently evil that his actions would require new words be created to describe the monster that he was. The depravity of someone who would construct a building solely for the purpose of torture, murder, and the “processing” of human bodies for profit, is unimaginable. Although it has inspired numerous books and movies, many people who are not avid true crime fans, have never heard this story. Even if you have heard this story, you’ll want to listen to this episode, because we’ve uncovered an even bigger story which is downright fascinating…

Was H.H. Holmes the true identity of Jack the Ripper?

We talk to two men who say they know this is a fact, and have spent years trying to prove it. We are joined by Dane Ladwig author of the book “Dr. H. H. Holmes and The Whitechapel Ripper” and Jeff Mudgett author of the book “Bloodstains”. Jeff’s last name is no coincidence, he claims to be the great-great-grandson of the protagonist in this story, Herman Mudgett, otherwise known as H.H. Holmes.

Jack the Ripper's hunting ground was the Whitechapel neighborhood of London. H.H. Holmes also had a connection to Whitechapel. His friend from the University of Michigan, Edmund Buckley, came from a wealthy Whitechapel family. Buckley and Holmes were partners-in-crime; they ran insurance scams and often sold corpses to medical facilities, not an uncommon way to make money in the 1800s.

According to census records, Holmes had a residence in Whitechapel. After he tried to sell a corpse to a local hospital, a formal complaint was filed against him. These records place him in the Whitechapel area around the time of the Ripper murders. Was he doing more than just his usual corpse-peddling?

Herman Mudgett, alias H.H. Holmes, was America’s first serial killer. No one knows for sure how many lives he took, but it’s believed he was responsible for killing as many as 200 people in the late 19th century. A con man, opportunist and evil genius, the crowning achievement of his dark deeds was the construction of a building later dubbed the Murder Castle: a hotel on Chicago’s south side that he engineered to be a factory of death, complete with a gas chamber, dissection room, trap doors and a basement furnace to destroy any trace of his sinister work. At the same time across the Atlantic, a killer was terrorizing the streets of London, murdering and mutilating at least five victims in the Whitechapel area of the city. To this day, the killer has never been caught or identified. He is known as Jack the Ripper. In American Ripper, Holmes’ great-great-grandson, Jeff Mudgett, sets out to prove a controversial theory: that H.H. Holmes and Britain’s most notorious serial killer, Jack The Ripper, were the same man. After twenty years searching for the truth about his notorious ancestor, Mudgett partners with ex-CIA analyst Amaryllis Fox to launch an all new investigation, using 21st century science and methodology to unlock the secrets of one of the biggest cold cases of all time.

The word is the series will premiere on July 11th.

I found a reference to the former CIA agent mentioned in the excerpt below :
