Thanks for the tip -- Amazon had the book in kindle format for less than $5, so I picked it up this afternoon! There were several others listed on the page that caught my eye, so I've added them to my wish list for future browsing. Amazon has that effect on me.

Victoria's reign was a long one (1837-1901). The London described by Mayhew in the 1840's was a fraction of the size of the one that existed when the 20th century dawned.

Broad brush statements about 'Victorian' prostitution are not particularly meaningful.
