However, I know Sweden does not have a large Jewish population, especially in the rural area where we know Liz was from.
Liz Stride worked as a servant for a Jewish family in Sweden before she came to England. Conceivably she picked up her knowledge of Yiddish while she was working for the family.

Best regards

As far as I can see there was no Brunswick Gardens in the East End. There is no such street listed in my guide to LVP Ordnance maps.

There was a Brunswick Place near Backchurch Lane, if that's any help.

Precisely. "Gustafsdotter" is a typical Scandinavian name, means "Gustav's daughter". Similar to Gustafsson. In Icelandic they have "Gustafsdottir".

I'm at work and can't check, but as I remember there was another Tiger Bay
south of Cable Street in the Limehouse area. Brunswick Gardens may have been a nickname rather than an actual place, a play on the regency pleasure gardens theme.

She received charity from the Swedish Church, as testified to by Sven Olsson, clerk of the church, at the inquest, and her name is in the records of the church, which suggests that she was not Jewish. On May 20 and May 23, 1886 Stride received alms from the Church. Olsson remembered her as "very poor." She gave as her address Devonshire Street off Commercial Road.

Thank you. I know about her connection to the Swedish church.

Default Never the twain...

Brunswick Gardens seems to have definitely been in the East End.

... perhaps it was a local expression (like "Itchy Park") rather than an official place name?

From the book 'A Prescription For Murder' by Angus McLaren....page 70.
It mentions one familiar name....Stamford Street is in Lambeth, the killing grounds of Neill Cream in London.

"Undoubtedly the most peripatetic prostitutes working on Stamford Street in the 1890's were the Jewish women from Poland, whom pimps exploited in London and then shipped off to South America or South Africa."

The Stamford Street Gang was run by Joe Silver*, who was born in Poland in 1869, emigrated to the United States in 1888, and arrived in London in 1895.

Silver and his accomplices, who had their headquarters at the American Hotel, Stamford Street, preyed upon young women recently arrived from Eastern Europe. Eventually, the London Jewish philanthropic societies succeeded in driving Silver out, but when he and fourteen fellow traffickers sailed for South Africa in 1898 they took with them 20 to 25 girls. The authorities were perplexed that so many prostitutes would allow themselves to be taken off to Africa and would refuse to be rescued. But rescued to do what ?

In the late 1860's, when there were an estimated 25,000 prostitutes in England and Wales....4 percent of them worked in Lambeth. 1,000 is the rough estimate.

-James Greenwood's 'The Seven Curses Of London' ( 1869, London, Rivers)

Lambeth, for those unaware, is not in the East End. Its more like Central London and across the Thames River, 2.5 to 3 miles from Whitechapel.
I just didn't know where else to post this.
