From Chairman Wood :

We are delighted to announce details of the talk being given by Robert Smith at the August Jack the Ripper Conference being held in London's East end:

Robert Smith
:
TWENTY FIVE YEARS OF THE DIARY OF JACK THE RIPPER: THE TRUE FACTS
Robert is the original publisher of the document entitled “The Diary of Jack the Ripper”, as well as being the diary’s custodian and legal owner.
He will set out what has been established about the provenance and veracity of the diary since it first emerged 25 years ago. There is now considerably more information on who wrote it - and who didn’t. He will seek to answer the key questions on the diary’s provenance, such as when and where the diary was found, and who found it.

From Adam Wood :

We are delighted to announce details of the talk being given by JOHN BENNETT at the August Jack the Ripper Conference being held in London's East End:
CHANGE IS INEVITABLE:
Looking back at the East End we know so well
With many of the key locations associated with the Whitechapel murders facing simultaneous and often drastic redevelopment in 2017, this presentation takes the opportunity to take long strides back in time to the way things used to be. Charting the history of the changing nature of these sites, and using archival photographs and documents, John will be delving into the recent past, living memory and beyond: and as much as these notable places will always be linked with the Ripper’s crimes, they can also tell us much about the changing face of the East End.

JOHN BENNETT is the author of several books on the East End of London and Jack the Ripper, including E1: A Journey Through Whitechapel and Spitalfields (2008), Jack the Ripper: CSI Whitechapel (with Paul Begg, 2012) and Krayology (2016). His next book, Mob Town: A History of Crime and Disorder in the East End will be published by Yale University Press later this year.

From Adam Wood :

We are delighted to announce details of the talk being given by RICHARD JONES at the August Jack the Ripper Conference being held in London's East End:

JACK THE RIPPER AND THE AGE OF THE EVERYDAY HUMBLE HERO
Jack the Ripper impacted on Victorian society far more than would have been expected, with the murders feeding into a general angst that had gripped society at large from the 1870s onward. The rise of the newspapers and the growth of investigative journalism had, likewise, led to people becoming more aware of a festering underclass that was threatening to undermine the social order.
From the 1860s the artist George Frederick Watts had been advocating the idea of the humble, everyday hero - an idea that the newspapers were quick to embrace. In 1885 a servant girl by the name of Alice Ayres died in a fire on Union Street after she had remained in the burning house to save the lives of three children. The press seized on the story as an example of everyday heroism which demonstrated that, contrary to the way they were being portrayed in certain parts of the media, the lower classes were as capable of acts as heroism as the middle and upper classes.
Throughout the 1880s more and more reports appeared of similar people who made the ultimate sacrifice attempting to save the lives of others. This would culminate in Watts establishing his "Memorial to Heroic Self Sacrifice" in Postman's Park, on the wall of which the names and heroic actions of ordinary men, women and children are still remembered.
Many of these acts occurred around the time of the Whitechapel Murders, and, with the authorities seemingly unable to protect their citizens against a single unknown miscreant, ordinary civilians came to see themselves as able to succeed where the police were failing. Thus was born the age of the everyday humble hero.
In this talk, Richard Jones will use the memorials in Postman's Park to illustrate how the newspapers began promoting the humble hero as a counter to the evils that were seen to be threatening society as a whole. He will also look at how some amateur detectives saw it as almost their moral duty to protect the streets where the police were so evidently failing.
