Default Design a logo

As part of a project I am working on I'm opening it up to the membership to design a logo for JTR Forums.

Submissions should reflect some kind of Ripper/Victorian theme, but also the scholarly nature of the site and must contain the site name. Copyrighted images should not be used.

The winning logo will be used for future promotional purposes and the winner may even receive a lovely prize.

So get those creative juices flowing!

Here's one I had in stock for the site before we decided to offer just a message board.

I quite like the tagline.

What's the copyright status on the Holmes image though?

It is an original Sidney Paget illustration that is in the public domain, as we see here:

Hi Tim

Here is the logo that you posted above as an attachment. The question is, is this a Holmes site or is it a Jack the Ripper site?

Sorry but I don't really think an image of Sherlock Holmes sitting with Dr Watson is entirely appropriate for a site that calls itself JtR Forums and that is dedicated to the discussion the Whitechapel murders of 1888.

Possibly an image from the case or something more generic like the Wall Street, New York City street sign that has a figure somewhat like Jack the Ripper is sometimes depicted (the image is not unlike the image of "Jack" on a Pan 1965 paperback of Donald McCormick's The Identity of Jack the Ripper). Who said the sharks on Wall Street are not like Jack the Ripper.

All the best

Chris

A very good point Mishter George. Care to try your hand at such an image?

I've always been partial to that image myself, since it perfectly delineates a pair of men in meaningful conversation, and who would have been ripperologists had they been born 100 years later.

Oh well. How about something like this, then?

I suppose the benefit of the Holmes illustration is that it's contemporary and crime related and quite recognisable to people.

It's both!

And so forth. Personally, I don't find that one character excludes the other, and Sherlock Holmes is the quintessential armchair detective that all ripperologists strive to be. I suppose that it will eventually be put to a popular vote via a poll, so I will wait for the other suggestions, if any.
