I agree with all of that. The Lipski trial offers a real slice of life in that place and time. The houses were rented by the room and the front & back doors were unlocked for tenants and anyone off the streets top ingress, egress, use the backyard privy, be serviced by a prostitute or commit murder.

Even a few news reports from the time mention the unlocked doors and easy access to backyards.

I posted a video awhile back, interview with Arthur Shawcross who is a terrible person and major serial killer. The main reason I posted the video was because he talked about how he sized up the police and interacted with them. As I recall he dressed like an undercover policeman.

Look at Hanbury Street. Didn't Richardson say that he regularly had to throw out prostitutes and their clients who were using the back yard for...ahem...liaisons.

Here is a copy of those 4 blocks, the Wentworth Model Dwellings.
You can see at the end of the bottom (last unit), they are designated as "blocks" (Block 3200).
The grey circles are hydrants.

Back at the time my wife & I were driving across N.Y. state, I think towards Rochester, or thereabouts. There was a police roadblock, they made us get out of the car, to check it out and opened the trunk/boot.
They didn't tell us why, when we arrived at our motel the news was on that police had set up road blocks hunting for Arthur Shawcross. Apparently he was in the area.

I'll go with, "& no 3 on right." I can see the possible I but it doesn't fit. It looks like "& no" to me.
