Of course, there will be no leather apron in sight. The proprietor knows enough to realise that particular suspect never existed. But there will be a book of popular piano tunes opened at the page for Danny Boy. And a satchel hanging over the back of a chair.

A room full of fog would be appropriate, not because Whitechapel was cloaked in fog in 1888 but because no one has the foggiest who the Ripper was.

It's been pretty much confirmed through researching the museum that this is nothing to do with Edwards.

All there will be is a simple wooden chair, over which is draped a coarse linen apron, lightly smeared with blood. And a well-thumbed book on Freemasonry.

All the evidence so far suggests it may well be someone pushing Chapman as the Ripper. I wonder what came first, the theory or the location.

If the museum is in fact Cable Street centric, I will send them some stuff on Shovel Alley.

Mr Palmer-Edgecumbe said: “We did plan to do a museum about social history of women but as the project developed we decided a more interesting angle was from the perspective of the victims of Jack the Ripper.

“It is absolutely not celebrating the crime of Jack the Ripper but looking at why and how the women got in that situation in the first place.”

Tower Hamlets council said: “Ultimately the council has no control in planning terms of the nature of the museum ... The council is investigating the extent to which unauthorised works may have been carried out.”

For the record, Mr Palmer-Edgecumbe and his associates have had a business related to a Jack the Ripper museum associated with them for about three years.
