It was written on a fence opposite the arch where the Pinchin Street torso was found so that would be September 1889. I think there are other examples of it being used and I don't think one of them was used as an insult. Debs will be the one to ask as she found it.

I think it's been found a few times, Rob.

We are delighted to announce our Keynote Speaker at the Jack the Ripper East End Conference, appearing on the evening of Saturday, 5th August 2017:

Charlotte Mallinson:
IN THE NAME OF JACK: RETHINKING VICTIMHOOD IN REPRESENTATIONS OF THE WHITECHAPEL MURDERS

Charlotte’s lecture will offer a different perspective on the Whitechapel Murders from the ones, which, by and large, have been represented in ‘Ripperature’ and the mainstream media. With an exploration of the killings in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the aim of her paper will be to shift the lens of analysis away from a recognisable but mythologised killer and centre it on the victims of the original murders and more recent crimes. In doing so, the presentation will draw on new research undertaken as part of her doctoral study. It will highlight and challenge the integral ‘Whorephobia’ that has been the backbone of so many ‘popular’ reimaginings of these heinous killings. Offering a challenge to the elevation of ‘Jack’ to mythic hero, it will explore its tragic impact on women in the years after the original crimes. Ultimately, she hopes to show that how ‘Jack’ and his crimes are remembered affects women - not just in the past but in the ‘here and now.’

Charlotte Mallinson is a Ph.D. researcher and lecturer at the University of Huddersfield. She is currently just over halfway through her doctoral degree. The working title of her thesis is, “How ‘Monsters’ are Made: An Intersectional Deconstruction of the Cultural History of the Whitechapel Murders, 1970-2015”. The overarching aim of her research is to analyse and historicise how the women killed during the Whitechapel Murders have been represented in ‘Ripperature’, heritage/tourism, film/TV and news-media.

Sorry Mark,

Spotted you had replied but my intention to acknowledge was forgotten.

If authors wish to have a table, do they need to contact you guys prior to the event?

Cheers

Yes, please. That would be handy, and we will do whatever we can to accommodate.

The network of streets that run behind the former Commercial Street police station still retain much of their Victorian era atmosphere; for the time being at least. This is Blossom Street which runs north from The Water Poet, one of our two venues for this years Jack the Ripper East End Conference.

We're delighted to announce details of our next speaker for the Jack the Ripper East End Conference taking place this coming August:

Tom Wescott:
READING BETWEEN THE LINES

Ripperology is composed of many different but intertwining disciplines. New finds, photographs of people within the case, and outrageous theories usually receive the most attention. However, reassessing what we already have can also prove thought-provoking if not enlightening. Hard Fact is King and always will be, but what of logical inference? Sometimes a thing is notable by its absence. Sometimes a slight shift in perspective is all that’s needed to bring the past into focus.

Assistant Commissioner Robert Anderson’s views on the Goulston Street writing and what they might tell us about his credibility and the ‘ascertained facts’ of his suspect’s guilt. Chief Superintendent Major Henry Smith and how what he doesn’t say in his memoirs might offer the solution to an age-old debate about witnesses.

Israel Schwartz and why the police did not want him at the inquest, the curious circumstance of his disappearance from the inquiry mere weeks after the ‘double event’, and why we should believe that Liz Stride remained alive after ‘Broad-shouldered Man’ had fled the scene.

These and more intriguing possibilities will be the subject of Tom’s talk, to be followed by a Q & A session.

Tom Wescott is the author of THE BANK HOLIDAY MURDERS: THE TRUE STORY OF THE FIRST WHITECHAPEL MURDERS (2014) and RIPPER CONFIDENTIAL (2017). He will be appearing live from America via Skype.

------------------------

Information on the talks from our other speakers will be announced soon, and we'll also be revealing our final speakers and other events!

Places are going very fast for this event, so if you have yet to secure your place by paying a deposit please visit www.ripconference.com
